HONOR ROLL: Out of more than 2,700 acute care hospitals, 125 achieved “A”s on equity, value, and outcomes, earning a place on the Lown Index Honor Roll.
REPEAT WINNERS: For 70 acute care hospitals, this is their second year in a row on the Honor Roll. The #1 ranked hospital on the Index, Duke Regional Hospital, has been #1 for the last three years.
CEO Pay: Hospitals don’t have to break the bank to get great results. Among the acute care honor roll hospitals with available data, most paid their CEO below the average amount compared to hospitals of a similar size.
U.S. NEWS HOSPITALS: While most of the U.S. News Honor Roll hospitals performed well on outcomes and value, only three received “A” grades in equity.

The Lown Hospitals Index measures hospital social responsibility as a composite of more than 50 metrics across health equity, value of care, and patient outcomes. Hospitals with “A” grades on each of the three major categories achieve honor roll designation. The Lown Index uses publicly available data from traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage claims; Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services datasets on patient safety, patient experience, and hospital costs; Internal Revenue Service Form 990; and other sources.
