The Lown Institute Hospitals Index is the first to measure Social Responsibility for more than 3,600 hospitals nationwide. The Index evaluates hospitals on over 50 metrics across categories of health equity, value, and outcomes. (press release | methodology)
The Lown Hospitals Index measures social responsibility as a composite of performance on equity, value, and outcomes. These 54 hospitals (out of over 3,600) received straight “A” grades in all three of these categories, giving them the highest rankings in overall social responsibility.
Fifteen of the 2023 honor roll hospitals also appeared on the list last year, and four hospitals have been on the honor roll three times in a row, including the #1 ranked Duke Regional Medical Center.

The Lown Hospitals Index measures hospital social responsibility as a composite of 53 metrics across patient outcomes, value of care, and health equity. Hospitals with “A” grades on each of the three major categories achieve honor roll designation. The Lown Index uses publicly available data from traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage claims; Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services datasets on patient safety, patient experience, and hospital costs; Internal Revenue Service Form 990; and other sources. Hospitals with “A” grades on all three categories of metrics received “honor roll” designation. CEO pay data is drawn from IRS form 990 for fiscal year ending 2020 unless otherwise stated.
